Carpenter Media Group Acquires EO Media Group

Carpenter Media Group, a Mississippi-based owner of local media outlets, agreed to acquire EO Media Group, taking ownership of more than two dozen newspapers, magazines and newsletters. The purchase expands Carpenter’s growing portfolio of community news titles and follows its earlier acquisition of Pamplin Media Group.

Carpenter Media Group, the parent company of Black Press Media, acquired Phillips Media Group's portfolio in August, purchasing 16 community newspapers across Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois along with the Nowata Printing Company in Springfield, Missouri. The deal expands Carpenter Media Group's footprint in U.S. community publishing and adds printing capabilities to its existing portfolio of more than 250 titles in Canada and the U.S.

Affiliates of Apollo Global Management completed the acquisition of a majority interest in Cox Media Group from Cox Enterprises, with Cox retaining a minority stake. The deal transfers ownership of CMG’s television and radio stations, Ohio newspapers, CoxReps and Gamut digital/OTT advertising businesses to the Apollo-backed company, which will continue to operate as Cox Media Group headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Scripps Company will acquire ION Media from an entity controlled by Black Diamond Capital Management for $2.65 billion, creating a national television networks business by combining ION with Scripps’ Katz networks and Newsy. Berkshire Hathaway is providing $600 million of preferred equity to finance the transaction; the deal is expected to deliver substantial synergies and requires FCC and HSR approvals.
