Insurance Acquisitions in Rhode Island

Hilb Group, a Carlyle-backed property & casualty and employee benefits broker, acquired a Rhode Island–based property and casualty agency (OceanPoint Insurance) effective November 1, 2025. The acquisition expands Hilb Group’s New England presence and adds a personal-lines-focused book of business to its regional portfolio.

King Risk Partners, a Gainesville, Florida-based insurance broker, has acquired The Insurance Center, an independent insurance agency located in Warwick, Rhode Island. The deal expands King Risk Partners' local presence in Rhode Island and aligns with its strategy of growth through partnerships with established regional agencies.

World Insurance Associates LLC acquired the business of Affiliated Insurance Managers (AIM) of Warwick, Rhode Island on April 1, 2024. The acquisition expands World’s regional footprint in Southern New England and brings AIM’s commercial and personal lines book and client relationships into World’s national brokerage platform; terms were not disclosed.

Hexure, a provider of sales and regulatory automation solutions for the life and annuity industry, has acquired Vive, a quote-and-e-submission platform for term life insurance. The deal combines Hexure's quoting and e-application capabilities with Vive's multi-carrier distribution network (used by more than 20,000 advisors and 55+ BGAs) to create a unified platform for life and annuity distribution.

The Hilb Group acquired OceanPoint Insurance, a Rhode Island-based agency, effective December 1, 2022, expanding Hilb's New England footprint. OceanPoint's principal Doug Mayhew and his team joined Hilb Group's New England regional operations to integrate the agency's property & casualty and employee benefits capabilities.

Everspan Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Ambac Financial Group, completed the acquisition of Providence Washington Insurance Company from a subsidiary of Enstar Group Limited effective October 1, 2021. The purchase augments Everspan Group's admitted carrier capabilities to launch new admitted programs, expand product offerings, and strengthen relationships with distribution and program partners.

Hilb Group acquired Rhode Island-based Health Quote, Inc., effective July 1, 2021, to expand its Medicare business. The acquisition brings Health Quote’s Medicare-focused clientele into Hilb Group’s growing Medicare practice and strengthens the buyer’s senior/Medicare capabilities.

World Insurance Associates LLC (WIA), a Top 100 insurance brokerage headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, acquired Dacey Insurance Agency Inc. of East Greenwich, Rhode Island on April 1, 2021. The deal expands WIA's presence in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts and adds Dacey's commercial contractor insurance and bonding capabilities to WIA's platform; terms were not disclosed.

The Hilb Group, LLC (THG) acquired Rhode Island-based Compass Planners effective February 1, 2021. Compass Planners is a specialized Medicare Advantage brokerage led by Jim Soucy, who — with three colleagues — joined THG to lead and expand its Medicare retail and wholesale practice. THG, a Richmond-based insurance brokerage and portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, said the acquisition will grow its National Benefits Practice and support expansion of its Medicare offerings.

Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage Inc. has acquired Newport Insurance Agency Inc., an independent agency based in Middletown, Rhode Island with 13 associates. Newport Insurance will operate as a division of Starkweather & Shepley and continue servicing clients from its Middletown location.

World Insurance Associates LLC (WIA), a nationally ranked insurance brokerage headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, acquired Bentsen Combies Insurance Inc. of East Greenwich, Rhode Island on June 1, 2020. The acquisition expands WIA’s national footprint and broadens coverage options and support for Bentsen Combies’ personal and commercial insurance clients; financial terms were not disclosed.

World Insurance Associates LLC (WIA), a nationally ranked full-service insurance brokerage based in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, acquired Mazzotta Insurance Agency of Providence, Rhode Island on March 1, 2020. The acquisition expands WIA's New England footprint and brings the long-running, family-owned Mazzotta agency into WIA's network to provide clients access to additional markets and services.

The Hilb Group, LLC acquired certain assets of Newport, Rhode Island-based D. F. Dwyer & Associates, LLC effective February 1, 2020. The small property & casualty insurance agency and its team (led by Dan Dwyer) joined THG New England to strengthen the firm’s P&C capabilities in the region; THG is a PE-backed platform controlled by The Carlyle Group.

The acquisition expands THG's property & casualty operations in New England; THG is a Richmond, Virginia-based, middle-market insurance brokerage and a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group.
