Best Axial Alternatives for Buyers

Keep Axial for advisor-run deals, and add one source for the deals its advisors never send you.

The best Axial alternative depends on the deal you want. Use Grata to reach owners before a sale, BizBuySell for businesses under about $2 million, Searchfunder if you run a search fund, and Dealsuite for European deals. Axial costs nothing up front, but it charges buyers a success fee: $150,000 on a $5 million deal. Keep Axial, and add one source for deals its advisors do not send you.

Is Axial worth the cost?

For most lower-middle-market buyers, yes, because you pay only when you close. Axial's pricing page says it has "no upfront costs, subscriptions, or commitments."

The fee applies to a deal you "first discovered" on Axial. It follows the Lehman scale: 5% of the first $1 million, then 4%, 3%, and 2% of each next million, and 1% above $4 million. Axial's own example is $200,000 on a $10 million deal.

Two terms lower the cost. Each closed deal earns credits against future fees, and the credits last five years. If you had two-way contact on a deal before Axial, you can ask for an exemption within 10 business days.

Put the fee in your model before the LOI. Our BizBuySell vs Axial comparison works the fee at three deal sizes.

When Grata beats Axial

When you want a company before it is for sale. Grata finds private companies by what they do, which is how add-on targets surface. Axial shows deals already in a process.

Grata gives you names, not sellers. You still write to each owner. Our Axial vs Grata vs SourceScrub comparison covers the database side, including Datasite's merger of SourceScrub into Grata.

When a listing site beats Axial

When the deal is small. BizBuySell's median sale in Q2 2026 was $349,250. Most of those businesses are run by the owner, so they rarely reach Axial's advisors.

DealStream is free to join. Its Pro plan, at $40 a month, unlocks 18,000+ premium listings.

Decision rule

  • You buy companies with $1 million to $25 million of EBITDA: keep Axial. Add the fee to every model.
  • You build a platform through add-ons: add Grata and plan for owner outreach.
  • You buy one business under $2 million: BizBuySell and DealStream alerts, answered the same day.
  • You run a search fund: Searchfunder, plus brokers who know your size.
  • You want deals Axial's advisors never post: add a source that searches broker and advisor sites directly.
