Patten Seed Company/Super-Sod Acquires Frog Pond Turf

Patten Seed Company (doing business as Super-Sod), a Heartwood Partners–backed platform, completed an add-on acquisition of Frog Pond Turf in Opelika, Alabama in December 2021. The acquisition expands Super-Sod's sod-growing footprint into Alabama (Auburn, Montgomery and Birmingham markets), preserves local management (Brad Baker remains farm manager), and increases supply of Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass while enabling Super-Sod to introduce products and services such as Soil³ compost and the Lawn Coach subscription in the region.

Patten Seed Acquires Mid Tenn Turf

Patten Seed, a portfolio company of Heartwood Partners, has acquired Mid Tenn Turf to expand its turfgrass production and Super-Sod retail footprint into Tennessee. Mid Tenn operates over 2,400 acres across farm locations in Manchester and Benton, Tennessee, and will continue producing warm- and cool-season turfgrasses to supply Patten Seed’s product lines and retail channels.

Heartwood Partners Acquires NativeSeed Group

Heartwood Partners LLC has acquired NativeSeed Group, a vertically integrated provider of native seeds and erosion control products headquartered in Carpinteria, California, from founder Victor Schaff. Heartwood said it will partner with the existing management team to expand the business organically and via strategic add-on acquisitions to grow geography and customer types.

Super-Sod Acquires Tri-Tex Grass

The deal expands Super-Sod’s distribution and farming footprint into Texas; Tri-Tex operations and leadership (Mike Pender and Mark Graf) will transition to operate under the Super-Sod brand.

NativeSeed Group (Heartwood Partners) Acquires Star Seed

The add-on expands NativeSeed's product offering (adding warm-season varieties and >300 seed varieties) and extends its geographic footprint into the U.S. Midwest to better serve conservation, farm, and restoration customers.

Super-Sod Acquires All Green Outdoor Center in North Georgia

Super-Sod, a vertically-integrated turfgrass and compost company headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, acquired All Green Outdoor Center in North Georgia (closing announced November 1, 2023). The purchase expands Super-Sod’s retail footprint in North Georgia and enables the company to offer its full product line — including Bermuda, Tall Fescue and Zoysia sod, Soil3 compost and expanded stone/hardscape inventory — to local landscapers and homeowners.
