Independent sponsors find deals through M&A advisors and brokers, deal networks, direct owner outreach, and referrals from operators and capital partners. Use advisors and networks to find active sale processes. Use outreach and referrals to reach owners before a formal process starts. Then check industry, size, geography, seller readiness, and financing needs against your acquisition criteria.

What do sponsor surveys show?
In Axial's 2026 report, 91.4% of sponsor respondents used sell-side intermediaries and 88.2% used deal networks. These are overlapping survey responses, not shares of closed deals.
Citrin Cooperman's 2025 report drew on more than 170 professionals. Among sponsor respondents, 74% cited business brokers and 65% cited boutique investment banks. Its population and year differ from Axial's. Neither survey measures PrivSource supply.
What opportunities did PrivSource record?
The audit found 842 distinct public opportunities under the matching rule below. All were live at the cutoff. These are opportunities available to buyers generally, not deals sponsors specifically pursued.
Each table below uses those same 842 opportunities. Source means how the record entered PrivSource, not exclusivity.
| Recorded source | Opportunities |
|---|---|
| Found by PrivSource from advisor sources | 784 |
| Entered by advisors | 38 |
| Entered by PrivSource staff | 20 |
| Total | 842 |
| Stored cash flow | Opportunities |
|---|---|
| Under $1 million | 355 |
| $1 million to under $3 million | 200 |
| $3 million to under $5 million | 77 |
| $5 million or more | 73 |
| Not stated | 137 |
| Total | 842 |
Cash flow is the stored dollar amount. The source may report EBITDA, adjusted earnings, or another measure. Seven opportunities use projected cash flow. Confirm the definition, period, and currency before comparing businesses.
| Broad location | Opportunities |
|---|---|
| United States | 651 |
| Canada | 84 |
| Europe | 1 |
| Undisclosed or remote | 106 |
| Total | 842 |
How many sponsor mandates were live?
At the same cutoff, PrivSource held 181 live independent-sponsor mandates. A mandate records what a buyer seeks. This separate population includes mandates created before August 2.
| Measure | Count |
|---|---|
| Live mandates | 181 |
| Named firms after merging matching firm identities | 151 |
| Additional firm records without usable names | 2 |
| Mandates without a stated lower earnings bound or explicit no-minimum choice | 10 |
| Mandates without a stated upper earnings bound or explicit no-maximum choice | 23 |
| Mandates without a location or explicit no-preference choice | 1 |
| Mandates with no geographic preference | 27 |
Missing-data rows use 181 mandates as their denominator and can overlap. Firm rows count firms, not mandates or individual sponsors. These counts do not establish funded buyers or completed transactions.
Which sources should you combine?
| Source | What it provides | How to check fit |
|---|---|---|
| Advisors and brokers | Active sale processes and seller access | Confirm mandate, timetable, financial definitions, and NDA requirements. |
| Deal networks | Opportunities from participating advisors | Check coverage, membership terms, and fees before pursuing a deal. |
| Direct owner outreach | Conversations outside advertised sale processes | Confirm ownership, willingness to sell, and the business model. |
| Referrals | Introductions through operators, investors, and professional contacts | Confirm who represents the seller and what information may be shared. |
Axial's buyer page states no access fee and a success fee for deals initially sourced there. Product terms were checked November 1, 2026. Read the agreement before joining.
How should you screen an opportunity?
Invented example: You seek a U.S. commercial HVAC business with $1–3 million of annual cash flow. An advisor sends a teaser showing $1.8 million. Keep it for review, then ask whether that amount is historical EBITDA, adjusted earnings, or projected cash flow.
Copy these columns into your sourcing list:
Business or project reference · Original source · Other sources · Industry · Geography · Financial measure and period · Seller readiness · Next action
Keep one row per business. Use a clear acquisition brief and a specific introduction to brokers.
PrivSource's AI sourcing agent finds opportunities across advisor sources and brings private deals to matched buyers. Buy-side access has a free application and preview for approved buyers. Paid memberships add access; PrivSource charges no success fee.
How were the tables prepared?
The creation window starts August 2, 2026 at 00:00 UTC and ends October 31 at 00:00 UTC, exclusively. The audit uses one frozen read. It excludes demo records, demo teams, identified staff or test teams, deleted accounts, and unavailable records.
Supply includes only live records marked public. Of 843 eligible records, two described the same HVAC opportunity from the same advisor. Matching geography, financials, and business details confirmed the repeat. We kept the earlier source, producing 842 opportunities.
The audit compared listing links, repeated titles, similar titles from the same advisor, and matching revenue and cash flow. Shared directory links did not establish duplicates. Query parameters that identify a listing were retained. U.S. states and regions map to United States; Canadian provinces map to Canada. Undisclosed and remote locations remain separate from known countries.
Mandates must be published, approved, unarchived, and unrejected. Their firms must identify as Independent Sponsor. Matching firm name and website merged one pair of firm records. Two unnamed firm records remain separate. Missing size excludes explicit no-bound choices; missing geography excludes explicit no-preference choices.
Limits: Anonymous teasers can conceal additional repeats. Live status describes the November 1 cutoff, not historical availability. These platform counts measure recorded supply and stated demand, not sponsors' sourcing success.
