Authentic Brands Group Acquires Champion; Ames Watson to Operate Collegiate and Teamwear Business

Authentic Brands Group has completed the acquisition of the Champion brand and certain operating assets from HanesBrands. As part of the deal, Authentic granted a license for Champion's U.S. collegiate apparel and teamwear business to GearCo, which will be managed by Ames Watson (with Fanatics as an investor), to drive growth in the collegiate and teamwear markets.

Aritzia has agreed to acquire a 75% stake in Vancouver-based premium athletic wear brand Reigning Champ for approximately $63 million USD, with the remaining 25% of equity to be converted into Aritzia shares in installments through 2024–2026. The deal accelerates Aritzia's expansion into men's apparel and will leverage Aritzia's direct-to-consumer platform, boutiques and operational infrastructure to grow Reigning Champ's brand and distribution.

Authentic Brands Group has acquired the Sperry footwear brand in a transaction that closed January 10, 2024, with the ALDO Group joining as Sperry's North American operating partner. Wolverine World Wide sold the brand for proceeds of about $130 million to strengthen its balance sheet; Authentic will convert Sperry to a licensed model while ALDO will operate Sperry's wholesale, e-commerce and store operations in North America.

KKR & Co. Inc. completed the acquisition of Varsity Brands from Bain Capital and Charlesbank Capital Partners in August 2024 in a deal reported at approximately $4.75 billion. Varsity Brands, a Dallas-based platform (including BSN SPORTS and Varsity Spirit) that provides team-sports apparel, equipment and event services, employs more than 7,200 people and later launched a broad-based employee ownership program.
