Databricks Acquires Lilac to Strengthen Data Quality for Generative AI

Databricks has acquired Boston-based Lilac, an applied research startup that builds tools to explore, cluster and curate unstructured text datasets for generative AI workflows. Lilac's team and technology will be integrated into Databricks' Mosaic AI and data intelligence platform to improve dataset quality, monitoring, and preparation for RAG, fine-tuning and pre-training of LLMs; terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition brings Iceberg expertise into Databricks to accelerate interoperability between Delta Lake and Iceberg (via Delta Lake UniForm) and strengthen Databricks' open lakehouse strategy; the deal is expected to close in Databricks' second fiscal quarter subject to customary conditions.
