Monotype announced it has acquired Hoefler&Co., the New York–based type foundry known for iconic typefaces such as Gotham, Mercury and Sentinel. The deal expands Monotype’s library and distribution through Monotype Fonts while Hoefler&Co founders Jonathan Hoefler and Carleen Borsella will step away to pursue other projects.

Monotype Acquires URW Type Foundry

Monotype has agreed to acquire URW Type Foundry GmbH from Global Graphics PLC, adding 513 typeface families (including Futura, Franklin Gothic and URW DIN) to its library. The acquisition expands Monotype’s IP and integrates URW designs into Monotype’s Mosaic solution and MyFonts.com to better serve enterprise and design customers.

Monotype Imaging Acquires Extensis

Monotype Imaging Inc. has acquired Extensis, a provider of font management solutions, integrating Extensis’ Connect software and team into Monotype to create an all‑in‑one inventory and font software solution. The deal brings Extensis’ employees in the US, UK, and Germany into Monotype; Extensis’ CEO and CFO are stepping away as part of the transition. The acquisition aims to combine Monotype’s library of over 150,000 fonts with Extensis’ management capabilities to expand product offerings and customer value.

HGGC Acquires Monotype Imaging for $825M

HGGC, a Palo Alto-based private equity firm, agreed to acquire all outstanding shares of Monotype Imaging for $19.85 per share in cash, representing an aggregate equity value of approximately $825 million. The deal was approved by Monotype's board, completed in October 2019, and will take Monotype private so it can invest in its font technology, digital imaging capabilities and growth initiatives.

Monotype Imaging Acquires Design210

Monotype Imaging Inc. has acquired Design210, a Seoul-based type foundry, to expand its Korean typeface library and deepen its presence in the Korean market. Design210 will continue operating under its brand in South Korea while Monotype integrates its fonts and team to better serve media, design and advertising customers globally.

Phaidon Acquires The Monacelli Press

Phaidon, the global publisher of the creative arts, has acquired The Monacelli Press, a New York–based publisher of illustrated books on architecture, design and the arts. Terms were not disclosed; Monacelli will remain a separate imprint and its staff will relocate to Phaidon's New York office as Phaidon expands its portfolio and category capabilities.
