Apple acquired Sonera, a California-based company developing non-invasive magnetic sensors to measure neural and muscular signals. The technology could support future Apple health monitoring, accessibility, prosthetics, and brain-computer interface-style interactions, potentially via devices like the Apple Watch.
Apple has agreed to acquire PlasmaSolve, a Czech materials science company that develops simulation software for plasma-based manufacturing processes. The European Commission filing says an Apple subsidiary will purchase all outstanding shares and offer employment to certain PlasmaSolve employees, though financial terms were not disclosed.
Amazon announced it entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Globalstar for about $11.57 billion (around $90 per share) in a cash-and-stock deal. The acquisition adds Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure, spectrum licenses, and mobile satellite services capabilities to Amazon’s Amazon Leo low Earth orbit network, with Amazon planning to launch direct-to-device services starting in 2028.
Apple acquired MotionVFX, a Poland-based developer of plug-ins, templates, and advanced tools for Final Cut Pro. The deal is intended to deepen Apple’s professional video-creator ecosystem and support subscription-driven offerings around Final Cut Pro and related services.
Apple quietly acquired Canadian AI startup DarwinAI earlier in 2024, adding dozens of DarwinAI employees to its AI team. DarwinAI’s technology — focused on making AI models smaller and faster and on visual inspection for manufacturing and supply chains — will be used to help Apple run more AI capabilities on devices for iOS 18 and other products.
