Closed Loop Partners-Led Consortium Acquires Majority Stake in Sims Municipal Recycling

A fund managed by Closed Loop Partners led a consortium of investors, including the Partnership Fund for New York City and several strategic corporate investors, to acquire a majority stake in Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR). The investment will modernize and expand SMR's circular-economy infrastructure across the New York–New Jersey metro area and Florida, accelerate recovery of recyclable commodities, and support geographic and capability expansion of SMR's operations.

Sims Metal, the metal recycling business of Sims Limited, has agreed to acquire the assets of Baltimore Scrap Corp and its affiliates for US$177 million plus working capital and other adjustments. The deal adds 17 facilities (including four shredders) across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey and ~600,000 tonnes per year of scrap volume, strengthening Sims' North American footprint; the transaction is expected to close in October 2023 subject to customary approvals.

Sims Metal, a division of Sims Limited, will acquire the commercial and operating assets of Pennsylvania-based Northeast Metal Traders (NEMT) in a bolt-on deal expected to close in mid-April 2023. The acquisition expands Sims Metal North America’s non-ferrous/copper recycling footprint in Philadelphia, adding approximately 60,000 tons per year of processed non‑ferrous metal and expected commercial and operating synergies.
