Brookfield Infrastructure and GIC Acquire Genesee & Wyoming Inc.

Affiliates of Brookfield Infrastructure Partners and GIC have completed the acquisition of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. in an approximately $8.4 billion transaction (including debt), taking G&W private at $112 per share. G&W — a Darien, Connecticut‑headquartered owner/operator of short line and regional freight railroads with about 8,000 employees and operations across North America, Europe and Australia — will be integrated into Brookfield's global infrastructure platform.

GATX and Brookfield Infrastructure Acquire Wells Fargo Rail Portfolios

GATX Corporation and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners completed the acquisition of Wells Fargo's rail leasing portfolios on January 1, 2026. GATX and Brookfield purchased Wells Fargo's rail operating lease portfolio (~101,000 railcars) for about $4.2 billion via a joint venture, while Brookfield separately acquired Wells Fargo's rail finance lease portfolio (~22,000 railcars and ~400 locomotives); GATX will manage the railcars for the joint venture.

Brookfield Acquires National Grid Renewables; Rebrands as Geronimo Power

Brookfield Asset Management, together with its institutional partners including Brookfield Renewable Partners, completed the acquisition of National Grid Renewables from National Grid plc and will operate the business under the Geronimo Power brand. The Minneapolis-headquartered company develops and operates utility-scale solar, wind and energy storage (about 2 GW operating, 1 GW under construction and ~20 GW in development) and will continue scaling Brookfield’s U.S. renewables platform.

Ironbridge Equity Partners, together with GNI's management team, has acquired a controlling interest in GNI Management Group Inc. (Great Northern Insulation) from Mill Street & Co., which will retain a minority stake. GNI, headquartered in Woodstock, Ontario, operates eight locations with approximately 300 employees and provides insulation, air sealing, fireproofing, cladding, and building diagnostic services across residential, commercial and industrial markets.

Boston-based private equity firm Berkshire Partners has made a strategic (majority) investment in RJW Logistics Group, a Woodridge, Illinois–based provider of retail logistics and consolidation services for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands. RJW CEO Kevin Williamson and other management will remain significant investors, and prior investor Mason Wells will remain a minority holder; the deal is intended to support RJW's growth, innovation and geographic expansion.

Western Midstream Acquires Meritage Midstream for $885M

Western Midstream Partners, LP agreed to acquire Meritage Midstream Services II, LLC in an all-cash transaction for $885 million to expand its Powder River Basin footprint. The deal adds ~1,500 miles of gathering pipelines, ~380 MMcf/d processing capacity and the Thunder Creek NGL pipeline; closing was expected in Q4 2023 subject to customary approvals.
