MyHeritage acquired long-time rival Geni.com and closed a $25 million funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners (with Index Ventures and Accel Partners participating). The deal expands MyHeritage’s global user base and capabilities — Geni will continue as a separate brand based in California and its staff will join MyHeritage to accelerate international expansion and product integration.

Genetic Technologies Limited (GENE) completed the acquisition of the direct-to-consumer eCommerce business and distribution rights of AffinityDNA, including websites, brand identities, laboratory testing and distribution agreements. The deal expands GENE’s direct-to-consumer channel and product portfolio across the US, UK and Europe, adding AffinityDNA’s consumer and pet genomics offerings to GENE’s geneType and EasyDNA brands.

Blackstone Acquires Ancestry for $4.7 Billion

Blackstone's private equity funds have entered a definitive agreement to acquire Ancestry from Silver Lake, GIC, Spectrum Equity, Permira and other equity holders for an enterprise value of $4.7 billion; GIC will retain a significant minority stake. Blackstone said it will partner with Ancestry's management to invest in data, product development and global expansion of the company's family history and consumer genomics platform, which has more than 3 million paying subscribers and roughly $1 billion in annual revenue.

QIAGEN Acquires Verogen

QIAGEN completed the acquisition of Verogen for $150 million in cash, bringing Verogen’s NGS-based human identification and forensic genomics products and the GEDmatch database into QIAGEN’s forensics portfolio. The deal gives QIAGEN exclusive distribution rights for the MiSeq FGx forensic sequencer version and is intended to expand QIAGEN’s capabilities and commercial footprint in the fast-growing Human ID/forensics market.
