Insurance Acquisitions in Massachusetts

Trucordia, a top-20 U.S. insurance brokerage headquartered in Lindon, Utah, has acquired Charles River Insurance, an independent insurance agency based in Framingham, Massachusetts with an additional office in Leominster. The acquisition strengthens Trucordia's presence in New England and expands its local personal and commercial lines capabilities.

King Risk Partners has acquired Acacia Insurance, an independent insurance agency headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, to expand its presence in the New England market. The deal adds Acacia's personal and commercial lines expertise and local client relationships to King Risk's platform to accelerate regional growth and broaden service offerings.

Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) has acquired Hayden Wood Insurance Agency Inc., an independent personal-lines agency based in Southborough, Massachusetts. Terms were not disclosed; all employees, including President and owner Morgan Duffy, will join MMA and continue to operate from the existing Southborough office. The acquisition expands MMA's private client capabilities with Hayden Wood's specialty in collector auto and motorsports insurance.

ALKEME Insurance, a national insurance brokerage based in Ladera Ranch, California, has acquired Blue Horizon Benefits, an employee benefits advisory firm headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts. The acquisition expands ALKEME's employee benefits capabilities and strengthens its East Coast presence, with the Blue Horizon team remaining in Danvers to support ALKEME's growth.

Brown & Brown, Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire RSC Topco, Inc., the holding company for Accession Risk Management Group, Inc., for a gross purchase price of $9.825 billion in a transaction expected to close in Q3 2025. The acquisition brings Risk Strategies and One80 Intermediaries (together representing a specialty brokerage, wholesaler and program manager platform with over 5,000 insurance professionals) into Brown & Brown's Retail and new Specialty Distribution segments to expand specialty distribution capabilities and market reach.

Reel Media Insurance Services, the specialty media and contingency MGA owned by Paragon Insurance Holdings, has acquired WISE Risk, a Needham, Massachusetts-based wholesale broker specializing in event, entertainment and sports insurance. The acquisition expands Reel Media's specialty product suite and capabilities across event cancellation, non-appearance, weather, sports disability and other contingency lines to better serve entertainment, sports and live-event clients.

Hub International Limited acquired the assets of Allegiant Global Partners, Inc. (AGP), a Boston-based health, welfare and risk consulting firm focused on international employee benefits. The acquisition strengthens Hub’s Specialty and Global Benefits capabilities and brings AGP’s founder and team into Hub’s national employee benefits organization.

The Hilb Group announced it has acquired a Massachusetts-based property and casualty insurance business effective January 1, 2025, expanding the firm's P&C footprint in New England. Hilb Group, a Richmond, Virginia-based insurance brokerage and advisory firm that is a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, said the deal adds to its regional offerings as part of an ongoing acquisition strategy.

Cadex Solutions Corporation, in partnership with Trivest Partners LP, has acquired Insurance Recovery Group (IRG) and its subsidiary Insurance Subrogation Group (ISG). The acquisition expands Cadex's insurance subrogation and second injury fund recovery capabilities and adds specialized claims recovery expertise to its order-to-cash platform.

Unison Risk Advisors announced that Avondale Insurance Associates has joined URA as its fifth platform company and the first in its non-retail division. Avondale, an excess and surplus lines underwriting management company based in Boston, will maintain operational independence while contributing specialty underwriting capabilities and international capacity relationships to URA's employee-owned platform.

OneDigital has acquired McWalter Volunteer Insurance Agency, a Concord, Massachusetts-based property & casualty and benefits firm with a 27-person team and over 4,500 clients. The acquisition expands OneDigital's P&C capabilities and Northeast footprint, and McWalter's team will continue to operate from its Concord, Andover, Danvers and Maynard offices.

AssuredPartners has acquired Halstead Insurance Agency, a Massachusetts-based personal and commercial insurance agency with two locations in Fitchburg and Sterling. The Halstead team of 16 insurance professionals will remain under existing leadership and will join AP's Northeast Region as part of the firm's continued expansion in the Northeast.

PCF Insurance Services has acquired the insurance business/team of Asset Insurance Agency, a Peabody, Massachusetts-based independent agency. The deal expands PCF's property & casualty and life/health capabilities in the New England market and adds a small experienced team to support PCF's goal of growing EBITDA through M&A.

Hub International Limited acquired the assets of Integrated Benefits Group Insurance Brokerage, Inc. (IBG), an employee and group benefits broker based in Stoneham, Massachusetts. The IBG team, led by CEO Tony Maffeo, will join Hub New England; financial terms were not disclosed.

World Insurance Associates LLC, a nationally ranked insurance brokerage headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey, acquired the business of NorthStar Insurance Services of Needham, Massachusetts, effective July 1, 2024. Terms were not disclosed; NorthStar (founded in 1995) is one of New England's larger independent insurance agencies providing business and personal insurance and risk management services.

ALKEME, a Top 40 insurance brokerage based in Ladera Ranch, California, has acquired Axial Benefits Group, a Burlington, Massachusetts-based employee benefits agency known for operating healthcare purchasing coalitions. The deal brings Axial's coalition-based cost-saving capabilities together with ALKEME's scale and resources to expand ALKEME's benefits offerings and presence in the Boston area.

Hub International Limited has acquired the assets of William R. Cargill Insurance Agency, Inc., a family-owned full-service insurance agency based in Topsfield, Massachusetts. Founder William "Bill" Cargill, Jr. and his team will join Hub New England; terms were not disclosed.

Denver-based IMA Financial Group has acquired EBS Insurance Brokers, a Newton, Massachusetts–based employee benefits brokerage. The deal expands IMA's presence in Massachusetts and strengthens its employee benefits capabilities for employer clients across New England.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. agreed to acquire Corvus Insurance Holdings, Inc. for approximately $435 million to expand Travelers' cyber underwriting and risk-management capabilities. Corvus, an insurtech-focused managing general underwriter specializing in cyber insurance and powered by AI-driven risk analytics, will be integrated into Travelers to enhance its cyber product suite and distribution.

Risk Strategies, a national specialty insurance brokerage, has acquired Strategic Benefit Solutions, Inc. (SBENS), a Burlington, Massachusetts–based employee benefits insurance agency. The acquisition expands Risk Strategies' national Employee Benefits practice by adding SBENS' plan design and benefits consulting capabilities; terms were not disclosed.

Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Natick, Massachusetts-based Eastern Insurance Group, LLC (a subsidiary of Eastern Bank) for $510 million (net of seller-funded expenses). The acquisition, expected to close in late 2023 and now completed, expands Gallagher’s commercial property/casualty, personal lines and employee benefits capabilities across the Northeast U.S.; Eastern Insurance reported pro forma trailing-12-month revenues of approximately $104 million and EBITDAC of $37 million.

Hub International Limited, through its Hub International New England affiliate, has acquired the assets of Worcester-based Horizon Insurance, Inc. The deal brings Orieta Kristo and the Horizon team into Hub New England to expand Hub’s personal and commercial insurance capabilities and strengthen its presence in Worcester and Central Massachusetts; terms were not disclosed.

MyPlanAdvocate (an AdirVentures portfolio company) has acquired Eversurance (formerly Crosspointe), a subsidiary of EverQuote, enabling MPA to expand into the under-65 health insurance market. The transaction transfers Eversurance's consumer-facing insurance brokerage capabilities and staff to MPA and supports growth beyond MPA's Medicare-focused business.

World Insurance Associates LLC acquired the business of Schlegel & Schlegel Insurance Brokers Inc. of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, effective July 1, 2023; terms were not disclosed. The deal expands World’s presence in the Cape Cod / Massachusetts market and brings the four-person independent agency into World’s national brokerage platform.

World Insurance Associates LLC, a nationally ranked insurance brokerage headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey, acquired Wm. F. Borhek Insurance Agency, Inc. of Halifax, Massachusetts on June 1, 2023. The acquisition expands World's presence in Massachusetts by adding Borhek's property & casualty insurance business; terms were not disclosed.

Relation Insurance Services, a PE-backed national insurance brokerage, acquired the assets of Garrity Insurance effective November 1, 2022; terms were not disclosed. Garrity, which serves Massachusetts individuals and businesses from five offices, will remain led day-to-day by President Bill Garrity as part of Relation's platform to expand its footprint and risk management capabilities in the East.

HUB International Limited has acquired the assets of James L. Miniter Insurance Agency, Inc. (Miniter Group), a Rockland, Massachusetts provider of lender-placed insurance, outsourced insurance tracking and related mortgage risk products. The purchase strengthens HUB's Financial Institutions Specialty practice by expanding its lender-placed insurance and servicing capabilities for banks, mortgage servicers and other financial institutions; terms were not disclosed.

Hub International Limited has acquired the assets of Winter Harbor Insurance Group, LLC, an independent insurance agency based in Woburn, Massachusetts. The deal expands Hub's commercial and personal insurance capabilities in New England; Winter Harbor's president, Jimmy Aiken, will join Hub New England. Terms were not disclosed.

Applied Systems has acquired Tarmika, a commercial-lines rating and quoting technology that streamlines small business insurance quoting. The acquisition will embed Tarmika's real-time commercial quoting capabilities into Applied's management systems (Applied Epic and EZLynx) and integrate its product panel into the Ivans Distribution Platform to expand digital distribution for carriers and agencies.

Eastern Insurance Group LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eastern Bank, has acquired the operating assets of the John T. Burns Insurance Agency, Inc., an independent, family‑owned insurance agency based in Newtonville, Massachusetts. The asset acquisition (effective August 1, 2022) expands Eastern Insurance's footprint and client base as part of its ongoing strategy of acquiring independent agencies.

World Insurance Associates LLC, a nationally ranked full-service insurance brokerage headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey, acquired Tarpey Insurance Group (Wakefield, MA) and Rush-Kent Insurance Agency (Arlington, MA) effective August 1, 2022. The family-owned agencies will join WIA's national platform to expand the firm's presence in the Greater Boston market; terms were not disclosed.

The Hilb Group acquired Cook & Company Insurance Services, a Hanover, Massachusetts-based employee benefits and medical stop-loss brokerage, effective August 1, 2022. The add-on expands Hilb Group’s New England presence and enhances its employee benefits offerings; agency principal Sue Shillue and her team joined Hilb Group's New England regional operations.

Hub International Limited acquired the assets of Stop Loss Insurance Brokers, Inc. and Berkeley Insurance Brokers, Inc., two Boston-based independent brokers specializing in medical stop-loss for self-funded municipal and employer markets. The deal expands Hub's medical stop-loss capabilities and strengthens its public-entity and benefits practice in Massachusetts and New England. Terms were not disclosed.

Specialty Program Group LLC (SPG), a holding company for specialty insurance brokerages and underwriting facilities, acquired the assets of ESP Insurance Brokerage LLC, a Worcester-based program administrator focused on sports, events and entertainment insurance. The deal adds niche products, in-house underwriting/binding authority and technology capabilities to SPG's portfolio and is intended to scale ESP's product offerings and service team as part of SPG's specialty insurance platform.

The Hilb Group announced it has acquired Dorchester, Massachusetts-based Lighthouse Insurance Agency effective July 1, 2022, integrating the agency into Hilb's New England regional operations. Lighthouse, led by Principal Brian Boucher, specializes in personal and commercial property & casualty insurance with a transportation focus (livery and taxis), and its team will join Hilb's transportation practice to strengthen the firm's specialty offering in New England.

Hilb Group acquired Massachusetts-based King and Cushman Agency, effective July 1, 2022, expanding Hilb's property & casualty footprint in New England. King and Cushman — a nearly 100-year-old Northampton agency focused on commercial and personal P&C lines — and its principal Scott King and team joined Hilb Group's New England regional operations.

Patriot Growth Insurance Services has acquired two Needham, Massachusetts-based employee benefits agencies — DMM Advisors and PFG Benefits — and will integrate them with its FBinsure platform. The additions expand Patriot's employee benefits capabilities and deepen its presence in the New England market; DMM has eight employees and PFG serves groups between 50–1,000 employees.

World Insurance Associates LLC (WIA) acquired J.K. Olivieri Insurance Agency, Inc. of Middleboro, Massachusetts on December 1, 2021; terms were not disclosed. The acquisition brings J.K. Olivieri's personal (auto/home) and commercial insurance book into World’s network, expanding World’s regional footprint and enabling the agency to offer additional products and services to its clients.

Patriot Growth Insurance Services, via its FBinsure platform, has acquired Paul B. Sullivan Insurance Agency, expanding FBinsure's property & casualty capabilities and regional footprint across southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The deal brings the long-standing, community-focused agency into Patriot's platform, providing additional resources and capital while the Sullivan team continues to serve its clients.

AssuredPartners, Inc. has acquired Fred C. Church, Inc., an insurance agency based in Lowell, Massachusetts. The 160-person agency, which reports $37 million in annualized revenues, will remain led by President and Chairman Mike Reilly and will expand AssuredPartners' footprint in New England.

MountainOne Insurance Agency acquired the Cross Insurance branch located at 101 South Street in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The deal retains the Cross Insurance team and expands MountainOne’s local footprint, bringing the combined MountainOne insurance operation to about 50 employees across six Berkshire County locations.

OneDigital has acquired Benemax, a Medfield, Massachusetts-based benefits administration and consumer-directed healthcare firm. The transaction brings 40 Benemax employees to OneDigital and strengthens OneDigital's presence and capabilities in the New England benefits advisory and administration market.

Venbrook Group, LLC acquired InterContinental Insurance Brokers, LLC, a Boston-based property & casualty insurance brokerage, to strengthen its East Coast presence and commercial real estate risk management capabilities. IIB founder Thomas E. Sleeper will continue to lead the business and become Managing Director of Venbrook Insurance Services Northeast Real Estate, supporting expansion of Venbrook's nationwide commercial real estate offerings.

The Hilb Group, a Richmond-based property & casualty and employee benefits brokerage, has acquired Forrest Insurance Agency of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, effective October 1, 2021. The acquisition expands Hilb Group’s P&C offerings and New England presence as Forrest principals Larry and Michael Forrest and their team join Hilb Group’s New England operations.

AssuredPartners, Inc. announced the acquisition of Baldwin Insurance Agency, Inc. and Welsh & Parker Insurance Agency, Inc. (together "Baldwin | Welsh & Parker") of Wayland, Massachusetts. The 27-person agency team will remain led by President David D'Orlando and Vice President Steven Joyce as part of AssuredPartners' continued northeast expansion.

World Insurance Associates LLC (WIA), a Tinton Falls-based insurance brokerage, acquired Rocco Rose of Brockton, Massachusetts on August 1, 2021. The acquisition expands WIA's local agency footprint and adds Rocco Rose's personal and commercial insurance book; terms were not disclosed.

Hilb Group, a Richmond-based independent insurance brokerage, acquired MillBrook Benefits and Insurance Services, LLC, an East Longmeadow, Massachusetts benefits and insurance agency. The deal brings MillBrook’s insurance professionals into Hilb Group’s New England regional operations, expanding Hilb’s presence across New England.

BRP Group, Inc. (through subsidiaries Baldwin Krystyn Sherman Partners and Millennial Specialty Insurance) agreed to acquire substantially all assets of RogersGray Inc., Breakwater Brokerage, LLC and Monomoy Insurance Group, LLC. The Partnership adds approximately $38.8 million of revenue and ~220 colleagues, expanding BRP Group's middle-market and MainStreet presence in New England and adding Monomoy's homeowners MGA to BRP's MGA platform.

Alera Group has acquired Boston Benefit Partners (BPP), a Boston-based health and welfare consulting and brokerage firm. The deal expands Alera Group’s employee benefits capabilities and footprint in Massachusetts; terms were not disclosed.

AssuredPartners, Inc. announced the acquisition of Lehrer & Madden Insurance Agency, Inc., a Natick, Massachusetts-based insurance agency founded in 1936. The Lehrer & Madden team will remain under current leadership while joining AssuredPartners as part of the firm's continued Northeast expansion and is the firm's 17th acquisition of 2021.
